Thunder on the Lake

Australia’s most powerful racing boats will thunder across Lake Macquarie this weekend.

The superboats will race at 1.20pm on Saturday 19 October and twice on Sunday 20th – at 11am and 1pm.

The best Superboats viewing spots include Eleebana, Marmong Point and Warners Bay foreshore.

Round Three of the 2019 Offshore Superboat Championships, held 19-20 October, will see super-sleek vessels reach speeds of up to 200kmh as they negotiate a 7km course starting at Marmong Point Marina.

Race teams include Maritimo Australia, and Simrad SUV – piloted for the first time by local boating identity and Marmong Point Marina owner Les Binkin.

Weekend crowds at Warners Bay can enjoy markets and pop-up licensed bars, open 10am-3pm both event days.

A vintage car display will take place at the southern end of the foreshore during Saturday’s competition.

Also on Saturday, free family water sports will be on offer at Marmong Point Sailing Club while Speers Point Park will host a noon-8pm Food and Wine Festival.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said action on the water would continue throughout the weekend, with junior boat categories racing the superboat course on both days, and jet-ski racing 10am-3pm both days from Lions Park at Eleebana.

Community events like the Superboat Championships bring so much vibrancy to our City,” Cr Fraser said.

They activate our lake foreshore and bring our community and visitors together to celebrate what we love about Lake Mac.”

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said other weekend highlights included a Show and Shine contest at Speers Point Park on Sunday, and aerobatic displays over the lake at 11.45am Saturday, and 9.45am and 11.45am Sunday.
