University of Newcastle offers free online short course to dispel diet and nutrition myths.

The University of Newcastle has launched a free six-week online course to help people make healthy eating choices and dispel diet and nutrition myths.

Led by nutritionist and researcher, Professor Clare Collins, and dietetics expert, Associate Professor Tracy Burrows, The Science of Weight Loss: Dispelling Diet Myths MOOC (massive open online course) uses the latest research to teach us how to develop a healthy eating plan and reach a healthy weight.

Every year, around the world, millions of people try dieting to lose weight,” Professor Collins said.

In this course, we’ll guide participants through the science of healthy eating and successful weight loss for the long-term.”

Participants can learn about the nutritional composition of different foods, how to use dietary assessment tools and calculate energy requirements, how to identify features of fad diets and healthy diets, and key behaviours for the successful long-term maintenance of a healthy weight.

Steps include measuring body composition, calories and kilojoules, energy density, portion size, and metabolic rate.

The course is available from September 4 via edx.org.
