Kaufland for Belmont North

Lake Macquarie City Council approved a planning proposal to amend the Lake Macquarie Local Environmental Plan 2014 (LMLEP 2014) to allow a Kaufland supermarket on the current Bunnings Warehouse site at Belmont North.

The four hectare site at 393 Pacific Highway, Belmont North, is being vacated by Bunnings Warehouse, who have traded from the site since 2001, and are moving their operations to Bennetts Green.

Proposed is a 4,000 square metre (M2) Kaufland supermarket, separate retail tenancies of 525 M2, a ‘shopping street’ shared mall with cafe and seating areas of 330 M2, and 1,825 M2 of Kaufland offices, plus 458 parking spaces

Council, at last night’s meeting (8 July), agreed to amend the LEP to insert additional permitted use of a shop and food drink premise. At present the site is zoned business use.

The proposal noted already poor traffic capacity of the Pacific Highway, with only two southbound lanes. Traffic flow testing concludes that regardless of the Kaufland development, significant additional southbound capacity is needed by 2029.

Kaufland – a European grocery chain begun in 1984 and subsidiary of the Schwarz Group, the world’s fourth largest retailer with 1,300 stores – is expanding into Australia.

A development application for the proposal is expected to be lodged in the coming months and will be assessed concurrently with the Planning Proposal.
