Our World

Welcome to our world.

This website explores the Australian city of Newcastle, NSW.

A small city, attractively sited between hill and harbour, a worthy “built environment” both modern and historical, closely related to the region’s Lake, Bay, and Valley communities.

When it became inevitable that railway tracks to Newcastle Station would be removed, and the city plan for three growth precincts gained traction (city east, Civic, and west end), the decades-long decay of the CBD’s Hunter Street dramatically reversed, driven at first by ongoing residential towers and ongoing Honeysuckle development, then state government funding for capital works, such as Newcastle Courthouse, university house, and the Wickham interchange.

Much of the street environment in the decade preceding this appears here as photo essays, along with many unique images never seen before in the public domain.

From 2003 until 2016 art, murals, and graffiti proliferated on the city’s generous inventory of decayed buildings. Now largely gone, along with the physical canvases they embellished, you’ll find them in our gallery – an archive of a fast disappearing urban culture and talented underground art community.
