Minmi Road Majorvamp

Stepping up her campaign to get Minmi Road upgraded, Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery reminds NSW Parliament and Council of the dangerous state of this busy local road.

Ms Hornery called on the Minister for Roads and Newcastle City Council to commit this year to turning Minmi Road into a dual-lane carriage from the corner of Minmi and Sandgate Roads, Wallsend, to the town of Minmi.

An upgrade is also an opportunity to add an off-road walkway and cycleway along the length of the road.

Section 94 grants arising from large urban development in the Blue Gum Hills area have not been adequately spent on road upgrades and off-road cycleways along Minmi Road to accommodate the swelling population,” Ms Hornery told Parliament yesterday.

The campaign follows a string of major accidents on this stretch over the past 10 years, the most recent incident on August 18 when a cyclist died after being struck by a vehicle.

The State Government has approved a massive housing development in Minmi, so it is crucial that they think about how our infrastructure and transport network will deal with all these new residents,” Ms Hornery said later.

The council has to step up as well and make sure that the fast growing Western suburbs of the city have the best roads and facilities available.”
