Two new Early Learning and Care Centres in NSW

Minister for Early Childhood Education and Child Care Kate Ellis and the NSW Minister for Community Services Linda Burney today announced the providers of two new Early Learning and Care Centres for New South Wales.

The two organisations chosen to operate centres on NSW Government primary school sites are Explore and Develop, North Ryde Public School, North Ryde, and Kay Dhami, Merewether Heights Public School, Newcastle

The two new centres will deliver about 130 new child care places and provide high quality early learning and care programs for children aged up to five.

The Australian Government will invest more than $2 million over two years to build these new centres.

The first few years of a child’s life set them on a road to adulthood – we want that road to take them to good health, education and social development,” Ms Ellis said.

Studies show quality early childhood experiences can overcome disadvantage and set children on the path to a happy and healthy life,” she said.

Ms Burney welcomed the announcement, saying the centres will help children make a smooth transition to school.

Building Early Learning and Care Centres on school grounds means children can grow to feel part of the broader school community,” said Ms Burney.

These centres are among eleven new Early Learning and Care Centres to be established in New South Wales, including one Autism-specific centre.

The centres at North Ryde and Newcastle are due to open late this year and form part of the Australian Government’s $114.5 million plan to set up Early Learning and Care Centres at 38 locations across Australia.

It is appalling that the location of the long day care centre at MHPS Public School was selected by employees of the Department of Education with the criteria of “buildability and loss of impact to the school” quote. Child safety is a HUGE issue with this site selection and the site selectors have admitted publicly and on separate occasions they NEVER considered this when choosing this site. How can employees of the D of E not consider child safety THE MOST important issue when building a tax payer funded, full profit long day care centre on school land? The entire teaching staff, P & C and local residents are ALL against the location of this centre primarily due to child safety of the children attending MHPS. This school has already had a child injured by a car on school grounds. This current proposal suggest 154 vehicles use an existing driveway which is closed to all but 6 cars for staff but used by the students and their families as a pedestrian access to the school. This is a huge risk and unneccessary risk to the school community. Due process has not been followed and no studies were done prior to the site selection. The ministers who have announced this funding need to act now and ensure the site. Kate Ellis and Linda Burney need to act immediately and ensure a new site is selected which is safe for the entire community.
