FLYING SUPPORT FOR LOCAL VICTIMS OF BREAST CANCER
Local people who undergo breast cancer surgery will be the beneficiaries of a partnership between Newcastle Airport Limited and the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation.
The partnership, to be announced today at the Airport’s end of year business briefing luncheon, will provide funding to help the Foundation produce post surgery cushions for people in the region.
The Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation Cushion is used by patients who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy. The cushion provides protection and comfort post surgery and while travelling. They have been produced by the Foundation since it was established almost 10 years ago and are made by teams of volunteers in Newcastle and the Tomaree Peninsula. In 2010 the Foundation is expecting to distribute more than 550 cushions to breast cancer patients throughout the region.
Newcastle Airport CEO, Paul Hughes, said that in addition to the Airport’s ongoing commitment to the local community it would hold a major corporate event for the Foundation.
The Airport will hold its annual corporate golf day at Pacific Dunes in March where we will promote the ongoing and valuable work of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation,” Mr Hughes said.
Money raised through that event and from our community support fund would be provided to the Foundation for the cushions,” he said.
Foundation President, Rosalie Taggart, said that the partnership with Newcastle Airport would allow the Foundation to offset the cost of materials for the cushions enabling it to resource some of the other important levels of support it provides.
Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation provides grass root support of local people undergoing treatment for breast cancer. As well as providing cushions, the Foundation also provides transportation to and from ongoing treatment and medical appointments, domestic house and lawn maintenance services and education scholarships for young people whose parents have breast cancer. It is a not for profit organisation managed by a volunteer board and includes teams of volunteer support groups.
