Students of New Lambton South Public School have shown they are at the heart of the digital age by designing the on-line promotion being used by the ABC’s new digital channel for children, ABC3.

The ABC invited schools to produce a 15 to 30 second video or animated banner to promote the launch of the station on December 4.

New Lambton South won with a 30 second claymation video of figures demonstrating the main subject elements the new channel, such as wildlife, animation, quiz shows and dramas, mainly for 8 to 12 year olds.

The school’s video and other finalists have been running on ABC1 and ABC2 since the start of the month, but they will receive their main prize on Friday, when the seven creators travel to Sydney to take part in the new channel’s launch program, and to accept a certificate and DVD/stills camera for the school.

ABC Children’s Television National Marketing Manager, David Gillett, has praised the students’ work.

The winning entry into the Me On 3 competition from New Lambton South Public School was an exceptional effort by the students involved,” said Mr Gillett.

We are proud to be able to feature this work during the televised launch of ABC3 on December 4th.”

Editor’s note: Good to see my old primary alma mater having a quick string of creative successes. Students’ designs below were chosen to embellish ‘e-cards’ – those communiqués dispatched by the state’s education officers.

STUDENTS’ CREATIVE TALENT BRINGS CHRISTMAS CHEER

Some Christmas colour is being introduced into the communications of the State’s top education officers thanks to the creative efforts of students.

In the run-up to Christmas they’ll use five card designs selected from more than five hundred primary and secondary entries submitted in a Department of Education and Training competition.

The Greeting Card Design Awards are part of the Department’s recognition of excellence in the use of educational technology, the Connected Learning Awards, which this year attracted a total of more than 3,000 entries.

Each Greeting Card entry was accompanied by an artist’s explanation and went through three rounds of judging before one card was chosen from the final selections by the Director-General of Education, as his printed corporate card.

Three other finalist entries were chosen by Deputy Directors-General as ecards to be emailed out as their corporate cards.

The winners were:

  • Heidi Chan of Epping West Public School: design chosen for printing by Michael Coutts-Trotter, Director-General of Education, and as an ecard by Leslie Loble, DDG Strategic Planning and Regulation
  • Elizabeth Hsu of Summer Hill Public School: ecard design chosen by Alastair Hunter, DDG Finance and Infrastructure;
  • Eddie Lew and Jayden Park of New Lambton South Public School: ecard design chosen by Trevor Fletcher, DDG Schools, and
  • Eddie Chen and Dominic Montanari, also of New Lambton South Public School: ecard chosen by Peter Riordan, DDG Workforce Management and Systems Improvement.
