The Medowie RSL Memorial is an important site for the local community to not only pay their respects to the veteran community on commemorative days but also serves as a daily reminder of the sacrifice others have made on behalf of the country.

Update, Monday 7 July 2009

Federal Member for Paterson and Shadow Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, and Assisting Shadow Minister for Defence, the Hon Bob Baldwin and NSW Member for Port Stephens Craig Baumann today paid tribute to the men and women who have served Australia in the armed forces, at the official unveiling of the restored Medowie War Memorial today.

The Medowie RSL sub-branch received $9000 in Federal and State funding to rejuvenate the 10-year-old memorial in the local park.

War Memorials honour those men and women who have fought for our country in the past and who are serving our country today so it’s very pleasing to see this Memorial restored,” Mr Baldwin said.

More and more people are attending services at the Medowie War Memorial, in particular the ANZAC Day Dawn Service, a testament to just how important and significant this site is to the local community.

It is an honour for both Craig and I to be apart of a special and significant day for Medowie.”

The restoration project received $4000 in funding from the Howard Government’s Saluting Their Services program, and $5000 from the State Government’s Community War Memorials Fund.

The RSL used the money to have the Navy Army and Air Force crests embossed on the memorial, as well as raise the original stone, put marble around the base and four sides of marble sheeting, as well as cleared foliage around the memorial.

War Memorials are an important part of any community,” Mr Baumann said.

As a local resident I am proud to see such a great memorial to honour such great people,” Mr Baumann said.

I understand the Medowie RSL now have plans to further improve the Memorial, including erecting brass plaques.

Both Bob Baldwin and I will work hard to lobby our Government counterparts for funding to make that happen.”
