NEW WEBSITE HELPS NAVIGATE LAND RIGHTS LEGISLATION

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch has launched a website to help land councils and the public access details about the State’s land rights legislation.

Mr Lynch launched the website at the Aboriginal Land Rights Act registrar’s office in Glebe, Sydney, today.

The website gives the local Aboriginal land council network and the general public a better understanding of the role of the independent Registrar in implementing the Act,” he said.

The Registrar administers the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 and provides guidance to Government, Local Aboriginal Land Councils and its members, people seeking to be registered as traditional owners.

This new website aims to outline the mechanics of the Act and the roles and responsibilities of the Registrar, Local Aboriginal Land councils and the peak body the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC),” Mr Lynch said.

It will provide people with easy-to-access information about the Act and how it may affect them or their land council,” he said.

Mr Lynch said the website would include land dealing amendments introduced to the NSW Parliament last week.

He said the proposed amendments to the State’s land rights legislation would help Local Aboriginal Land Councils drive economic development and create jobs.

Mr Lynch said the website would also promote Local Aboriginal Land Council board elections to be held between July and September.

It’s important that Aboriginal people are members of their local Aboriginal land council membership rolls so they can have their say,” he said.

As a result of the Aboriginal Land Rights Ac 1983, New South Wales is the only State in Australia with a democratically-elected structure to represent the interests of its land councils.
