AFFORDABLE HOUSING BOOST BRINGS CBD REVITALISATION CLOSER

The revitalisation of Newcastle’s city centre has been given a welcome boost today with the transfer of Wickham School to the University of Newcastle.

Minister for Housing David Borger today approved the transfer of ownership of the historic school from Newcastle City Council, together with $1.6 million in Building Better Cities Funding to the University.

Minister for the Hunter and Member for Newcastle Jodi McKay has thrown her support behind this initiative, which will provide affordable student accommodation, and will contribute to the first stage of the University Precinct catalyst project.

This is an innovative plan, which will ensure the upkeep of the Wickham School building,” Ms McKay said.

The funding will also be used to facilitate the construction of affordable student housing in the Honeysuckle area, supporting the University’s relocation to the city centre as part of the city revitalisation project.

It comes on top of the NSW Government’s commitment of $4 million in Crown land to the University of Newcastle, which has the potential to place up to 7,000 students and 1,000 staff into the heart of the city.”

Mr Borger said this new initiative will ensure Newcastle students have access to affordable housing.

Over the last 2 years rents for 3 bedroom houses in Newcastle have increased on average by $40 per week to a median rent of $320 per week,” Mr Borger said.

This represents a 14 per cent increase, which is in excess of wage growth and CPI increases over the period.

Similarly over the same period the median rent for a 2 bedroom unit in Newcastle has increased by $40 per week to a median rent of $280 per week, representing a 17 per cent increase.”
